More about N:"Following completion of his undergraduate education at the University of Florida, Dr. N. Scott Gorman attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, graduating valedictorian and earning his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1973. Following thirteen years of private optometric practice, he limited his practice to the management of residents of nursing facilities and subsequently received appointments to the professional staffs of nineteen skilled nursing facilities and one long-term care hospital in the South Florida area. In 1991, Dr. Gorman joined the faculty of the College of Optometry at Southeastern University of the Health Sciences and served as the Director of Geriatric Optometry until 1994 when he was appointed Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Following his three year tenure as Associate Dean, he returned to teaching. In 2004, Dr. Gorman became the college’s Director of Continuing Education, a position he served in until 2009. Dr. Gorman held the rank of Professor of Optometry, was the Director of Development and Alumni Relations for Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry from 2009 - 2011, and was a member of the staff of the university’s Division of Institutional Advancement. He served on several university and college committees. During his administrative tenure he completed the requirements for a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in gerontology at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), and he subsequently enrolled in a graduate program in higher education, specializing in health care education. ate School of Education and Human Services selected him to receive the Ed.D. Higher Education Leadership Sebastian V. Martorano Honor Award for his outstanding doctoral dissertation. Dr. Gorman is the originator of a public policy statement adopted by the American Public Health Association in November 1995 titled Assuring Access to Vision Health Services for Nursing Facility Residents. In 1997 he was invited by the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home Reform to represent the American Optometric Association as a member of the consensus panel responding to the 1993 Pew Commission Report on the Health Care Workforce. Two of Dr. Gorman’s noteworthy publications are Optometric Services in Nursing Facilities, a chapter that appears in the book Treating Vision Problems in the Older Adult (1997) and The Elderly, a chapter appearing in the book An Optometrist's Guide to Clinical Ethics (2000). His most recent publication is titled Online Continuing Optometric Education: A Survey of the Schools and Colleges of Optometry. It was published in the Journal of Optometric Education, Winter Issue, 2006. Dr. Gorman served as a consultant to the National Board of Examiners in Optometry as well as the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education, and he served as a course reviewer for the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education. He is Past-Chair of the American Academy of Optometry’s Optometric Education Section; Past-Chair of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry’s Continuing Education Directors Special Interest Group; Past-Chair of the America Optometric Association’s Ethics and Values Committee and Geriatric and Nursing Facility Committee; and he served as a member of the Association of Schools and Colleges Development Directors Special Interest Group. Dr. Gorman retired from Nova Southeastern University on May 1, 2011 and returned to clinical practice. He resides in Tamarac, Florida with his wife Sarah and two fur-kids, Allie Kat (Russian Blue) and Shayna Bear (Pomeranian).".
